Numerical simulations in support of the design of an ultrasonic device for sub-assembly identification

In this paper, it is shown how numerical simulations can help designing an ultrasonic instrument operating in harsh conditions. To prevent fuel handling errors sodium cooled fast reactors, the identification of sub-assemblies using ultrasound being investigated. It based on interpretation a code (aligned notches) engraved sub-assembly head emitting/receiving sensor. This reading performed liquid with high temperature (up to 600°C) transducers. A first experiment demonstrated feasibility method. The quality and robustness depend various parameters related beam (spectral response, focal distance, spot size), geometry (especially notches’ dimensions) geometrical alignments. order avoid numerous experiments, two models are developed. one finite element simulation sensor providing its radiated field. model validated well-known analytic solution Rayleigh integral; then applied used experiment. distance diameter close expected values. second simulation, CIVA software, provides scan code. result good agreement comparison water shows that tool relevant for easily taking into account misalignment misorientation scan.
